Frequently Asked Questions
USCIS publishes a processing-time range that represents the time it takes 80% of cases to be completed at a given office. The Inquiry Date column shows the case-receipt date that is currently outside the normal processing window — only cases filed before that date are eligible for an outside-normal-time inquiry.
USCIS workload, staffing, and case mix differ by office and service center. The same form filed at different offices can have substantially different processing times. Cases are routed by the applicant's category and (for some forms) state of residence.
Processing times have generally lengthened since 2020 due to USCIS backlogs. USCIS has rolled out premium processing for additional categories, including I-140 EB-1A and EB-2 NIW, to allow eligible applicants to receive a decision in 45 business days for an additional fee.
